Why chiropractic gets results
Chiropractic is based upon some very simple principles that most of us would agree upon. First, let us recognize the fact that THE BODY IS A SINGULAR UNIT no matter the complexity of its makeup. This becomes obvious when we realize that we all start out as a single cell. A second principle observes the phenomenon that THE BODY HAS SELF HEALING AND SELF REGULATING CAPABILITIES; early chiropractors referred to this as INNATE INTELLIGENCE. Another principle states there is a reciprocal RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN the STRUCTURE of the body and its FUNCTION.
These principles are operational from the molecular structures of the individual cells and tissues on to and through the various systems of the body. These principles cross the boundaries between all health care providers, and both separate and bind them together at the same time. The Doctor of Chiropractic (Chiropractor) pays particular attention to the functional and structural relationships between the nervous system and the musculoskeletal system.
Chiropractors recognize a condition in the body called SUBLUXATION. Subluxation is a functional disorder that occurs in the joint structures of the body, particularly the SPINE. Any joint in the body, however, can be affected by subluxation. Traditional Chiropractic states that subluxation interferes with the expression of INNATE INTELLIGENCE in the body and in that manner reduces the potential to be healthy.
Subluxations impair both neurological and mechanical function. Over time they deplete the body's health reserves and predispose it to various pain syndromes and conditions of poor health. Subluxations are caused by stresses (mechanical, chemical or psychological) that overwhelm the resistance of the body. They can develop suddenly or slowly over a period of time.

While a Chiropractor may provide many different types of health services, the primary service that defines the profession is the correction of subluxation. The primary method of that correction is called ADJUSTMENT. The adjustment is an intelligent introduction of physical energies into a joint structure for the purpose of normalizing its function, thereby promoting self healing and self regulation. There are many, many effective means of adjustment. A Chiropractor may also provide other services to assist in the healing process depending upon his or her training.
A Doctor of Chiropractic's education includes a prerequisite of 2-4 years of university level education (depending on the institution and particular state requirements). The Chiropractic degree program itself includes 2 academic years of basic sciences (anatomy, physiology, pathology, public health, biochemistry) followed by 2 academic years of clinical sciences (physical and laboratory diagnosis, diagnostic imaging, clinical and differential diagnosis, physiotherapy, bio-mechanics, specific training in spinal and extremity adjustments/manipulations, nutrition, Chiropractic clinical application). All this is followed by a period of internship in one of the institution's public clinics.
